The terminology of research ethics

12/13/2012

Whether you are writing a dissertation or a thesis, the basic process of research will remain the same. You will start with choosing a topic for research, identify the requirement of data, find data resources and select the methods to be followed, collect data from resources, analyze the data and interpret the results. Throughout this process, you will need to follow certain ethics of research. As a study, which consists of participants from some social or cultural group, or unveils the details of the chosen target group, research will have to abide by certain principals. Even in scientific experiments, there are certain rules, and any researcher is not allowed to overlook the same.

When research in medicine and warfare was at its nascent stage, there were many instances of unethical behavior by the research organizations and even individuals. After such cases, the research fraternity made conscious efforts and took steps to develop some ethical code and prevent practices that go against the ethics. Today, any study, which violates the rules, will not be accepted. Hence, most Dissertation Writing Services adopt ethical practices for completion of the research, providing consultation to scholars and documentation of the research report.

There are a few terms which social science researchers and medical researchers use to denote the ethics to be followed. Voluntary participation means that the target group consists of people who agree to be a part of the research without any coercion or force. Earlier, the researchers worked with captive participants who were jail inmates or staying in some institution. Now, it is compulsory to ask every member who is taking part whether he or she is comfortable with sharing their information or not.

Another related term is informed consent and implies that the participants are informed in detail about all aspects of the research, especially those factors which have a potential to harm them. The risks involved must be made clear, and a no objection letter must be attained from the participants. Every international university states in its rules that such a letter must be produced. Here, it must be made clear that harm is not restricted to physical injury. It can also mean psychological harm or stress caused by the research.

Two related terms, which you would have come across, are confidentiality and anonymity. While the first means that the information provided by the participants will be kept secret and will not be shared to any third party for any purpose; the latter relates to the privacy of the participant, and connotes that the identity of the person will not be known to anybody, even the other participants. It is possible that the researcher also does not know the real identity of the person who is sharing information through phone or email.

In many colleges, there is an Institutional Review Board, which keeps an eye on the research projects, to ensure that they are completed in an ethical manner. As a master’s scholar, if you are confused about the ethical propriety of some action, taking MBA Thesis Writing Service will be highly beneficial.
